Tuesday, January 29th 2013, President Obama spoke live to the nation demanding immigration reform. “We do not need congress to pass the dream act, we need congress to act on a comprehensive immigration reform,” stated President Obama. The President went so far to say that he will send his own Bill to Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform if Congress fails to move fast enough.
1. The U.S. borders need to be secure, or as secure as we can make them.
2. Employers need to be checking the immigration status of employees (employment verification).
3. There needs to be a more direct path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.
4. There needs to be a more sustainable immigration system moving forward.
There is strong support for immigration reform from the general public, economists, members of Congress and the Senate, and the President of the United States. The consensus has a little ways to go before becoming a bill, but it is strikingly clear that immigration reform is not an “IF” but a “WHEN” in the year 2013.
